Closing Out Hispanic Heritage Month with Breakfast My Way

Posted on Wednesday, October 25th, 2023

The first Breakfast My Way of the year was held on October 25 to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month! Breakfast My Way is an event sponsored by the Parents’ Association to bring parents together to learn about the breakfast traditions, holidays, and cultures of their fellow Gaynor families. Hosted by Mina Newman, parent of Valentina in the Dark Blue Cluster, the breakfast featured a menu of empanadas (beef, chicken, and spinach), conchas, and toasted hot chocolate. The warm treats and hot chocolate helped with the chill of the morning as the weather turns colder.

Director of DEI Stella Mulatu gave a short introduction of how Hispanic Heritage Month has been celebrated at Gaynor so far this month, with student discussion in Town Halls and special projects, as well as a visit and performance by Gaynor’s neighbors, Ballet Hispanico. In Stella’s words, this Breakfast My Way acted as “the cherry on top” to a wonderful month of learning and celebration.

Mina shared a few words about her family, and how her mother was from Peru and her father’s family was Russian Jewish. With Valentina’s father being from Mexico City, this mix of cultures and traditions culminates in a very elaborate breakfast spread, such as the menu for this morning. Mina ended her remarks by saying, “I hope you all enjoy it, and really feel the warmth that comes from our culture and the richness and the thriving of the flavors that we have today.”
