This Math Class is Making Us Hungry

Ms. Sugg’s virtual classroom

Even though we are not able to dine in restaurants in real life these days, Caroline Sugg’s Green Cluster math group imagined some decadent creations for a recent math lesson. Each student was tasked with envisioning a new restaurant, and creating a themed menu including beverages, appetizers, entrees, and desserts, with prices for each item.

As each student invited their classmates to visit their virtual restaurants as a presenter, the remaining students wrote down the prices for the items of their choice in each of the categories. Once everyone had made their choices, they added up all the prices to find the subtotal, and then calculated the tax and tip for their “meal.”

In addition to learning some very practical math facts, the students were treated to some very creative restaurant themes. Cassie’s restaurant had a “Stranger Things” theme, and included menu items like, “Friends Don’t Fry Ravioli” and “Demogorgons in a Blanket.” Everett imagined a “Florida Man” restaurant, which featured “Deep Fried Spam Filled Donuts” and other delicacies.

Co-Founder and Director of Education Yvette Siegel-Herzog and Head of School Dr. Scott Gaynor both joined the online class. Ms. Siegel complimented the students at the end of the class, saying, “I would go out to dinner with any one of you — you are all very generous tippers! This was fabulous — job well done!”

Dr. Gaynor said, “I thoroughly enjoyed attending this interactive math class. I found the students to be engaged, comfortable, and serious about their work. The presentations were very entertaining and highlighted their strong presentation and math skills. It was the highlight of my day.”
