Sharing Lunar New Year Traditions at PA’s Breakfast My Way

On February 15, the North Cafeteria was once again covered in decorations and food was laid out in waiting for parents to arrive for the morning’s Breakfast My Way. This Breakfast My Way was hosted by Tina Tseng, parent to Zoey in the Yellow Cluster.

Breakfast My Way is an event sponsored by the Parents’ Association to bring parents together to learn about the breakfast traditions, holidays, and cultures of their fellow Gaynor families. This week’s menu featured Tina’s homemade dumplings made with chicken, mushroom, and kale, and a vegan option with tofu, beans, and vegetables. There were also sweet and fluffy breakfast buns, clementines, and jasmine tea. The red decorations brought a cheerful mood as parents gathered around Tina to hear her explain more about her family’s Lunar New Year traditions, and open the floor to others to share their traditions.

Tina said, “Lunar New Year is different every year because it’s based on when the new moon lands. It’s about bringing family together and eating lots of food; one of traditions we have is eating dumplings and noodles, as they bring prosperity for the new year, and we have them to celebrate. We are so grateful for this Gaynor community, and I am so happy and honored for all of you to join me this morning for Breakfast My Way!”

Other parents shared that their family eats hotpot for the new year, and Tzo Ai Ang, parent of Elizabeth in the Orange Cluster, shared that she went to Malaysia for Lunar New Year, where children set off fireworks in the streets during new year celebrations.
