Community Learning Center Turns 10!

Stephen Gaynor School is known for the rich, rigorous and nurturing environment in which students gain the skills and confidence necessary to succeed. While learning can be a challenge for some Gaynor students, they are fortunate to attend a school that provides an individualized educational program. Through the Community Learning Center (CLC), Gaynor students and teachers devote their time and skills to help those who may not have the same advantages.

Now in its 10th year, the CLC is a free afterschool reading program for children in New York City public schools. Led by Kate Adlin and Kristi Evans, the program has grown from 10 students to nearly 30, demonstrating the need for small group tutoring. For one hour, twice a week, first and second grade students from neighborhood schools gain valuable tutoring lessons from Gaynor staff, with assistance from alumni volunteers and current students. Lessons occur in small groups and teachers draw on their extensive experience with the Orton-Gillingham method, directly supplementing the instruction students receive in their regular classrooms.

The CLC provides a boost to the students’ regular program, which can often get them back on grade level and simultaneously increase their self-esteem. When asked how the students enjoy the program, Ms. Evans said, “I just got an email from a CLC parent commenting on how enthusiastic her daughter is to come each week!”

Thanks to financial assistance through grants, donations, and fundraising events, the CLC is free to community students. Donations help subsidize snacks, supplies, and a new book each student receives at the end of the year.

The CLC traditionally holds two fundraising events each year, the Jackie Long Memorial Basketball Tournament in the fall and Cycling for Success in the spring. According to Ms. Adlin, “This year the CLC implemented a new fundraiser, a Zumba class for teachers led by our Gaynor teacher Kristen Kurre. It was a fun way to get in a workout and support this great program.” Stay tuned for information on the spring event.
