A Taste of Ethiopia: PA Sponsors “Breakfast My Way”

This week Gaynor’s Parents’ Association held its second Breakfast My Way event in the Early Childhood garden. The monthly event is a way for the parent community to come together, get to know each other better, and to try different breakfast traditions from other parents.

This month was hosted by Adey Fisseha, mother of NeAmin in the Orange Cluster and Tinsaye in the Pink Cluster. Both Adey and her husband, Amanuel Kiros, were born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, so she brought a taste of home with a traditional Ethiopian breakfast.

Parents enjoyed chechebsa, a thin, wheat flatbread, cut up and mixed with spices and clarified butter, and kinche, cracked wheat cooked with garlic. They also tried Ethiopian coffee (buna) and spiced tea (kimem shay).

“Ethiopia is widely considered the birthplace of coffee, and the coffee ceremony is an important part of the culture,” Adey said. “Spiced Ethiopian tea is made by boiling the water with cinnamon sticks, cinnamon cloves, and cardamom before adding tea leaves.”

Adey emphasized the importance of keeping her family connected to the culture of Ethiopia, saying, “Ethiopian food keeps our ties to our home country, and we hope it does the same for our kids.”
