Dr. Derald Wing Sue Speaks to Gaynor Community about Microagressions

On February 10, the Parents’ Association Diversity Committee welcomed Dr. Derald Wing Sue to present on “Stereotype Threats, Bullying and Microaggressions” for the Gaynor Community. Dr. Derald Wing Sue is a professor of counseling psychology at Columbia University and has authored several books, including Microaggressions in Everyday Life: Race, Gender and Sexual Orientation and Race Talk and the Conspiracy of Silence, both of which are now best sellers. Dr. Sue’s discussion was followed by questions and conversation with the audience.

In addition to being a professor of psychology at Teachers College, Dr. Sue was among the first to testify before Bill Clinton’s President’s Advisory Board on Race in 1996. He served as a past president of the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues, a co-founder and first president of the Asian American Psychological Association, and the president of the Society of Counseling Psychology of the American Psychological Association. He has written over 150 publications on various topics such as multicultural counseling and psychotherapy, psychology of racism and anti-racism, cultural diversity, cultural competence, and multicultural organizational development, but more specifically, multicultural competencies and racial microaggression.
