We are excited to share an important new chapter in Stephen Gaynor School’s more than 60-year history: Gaynor is coming to Brooklyn.
Following approval by our Board of Trustees, Stephen Gaynor School has announced plans to open the Stephen Gaynor School Brooklyn Early Childhood Center (Brooklyn ECC) in Fall 2028.
The new Early Childhood Center will expand Gaynor’s reach beyond our longtime home on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, bringing our specialized approach to teaching students with language-based learning differences to more young children and families across New York City.
For years, we have heard from Brooklyn families interested in a Gaynor education but for whom the daily commute to the Upper West Side—particularly with a young child—can be challenging. At the same time, we have seen a growing need for specialized early childhood options for children with language-based learning differences.
The Brooklyn ECC represents an opportunity to respond to both.
“Early intervention can change the trajectory of a child’s educational experience,” said Dr. Scott Gaynor, Head of School. “We are excited to expand access to the kind of specialized support, literacy instruction, and individualized attention that helps students with language-based learning differences build confidence and thrive.”
Founded in 1962, Stephen Gaynor School has spent more than six decades developing and refining an individualized educational program for bright students with language-based learning differences. Gaynor’s approach integrates evidence-based instruction, social-emotional support, small classroom environments, and deeply rooted expertise in Orton-Gillingham. The School is one of only a small number nationwide accredited by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators and the only school in New York with that distinction.
The Brooklyn ECC will build upon that history and expertise while creating a program specifically focused on the early childhood years. It will be a distinct Early Childhood Center rather than a second Pre-K–8 campus, allowing Gaynor to concentrate its Brooklyn presence on young learners during these important foundational years.
There is much more to come between now and opening day.
As planning moves forward, we look forward to sharing more about the Brooklyn ECC, including its future location, programming, admissions, and the people and ideas helping shape this next chapter of Stephen Gaynor School.
The Stephen Gaynor School Brooklyn Early Childhood Center is anticipated to open in Fall 2028.
For now, we are thrilled to celebrate the beginning of this journey and the opportunity to bring Gaynor to Brooklyn.
