In December 2015, members of the science faculty oversaw the installation of a WeatherBug weather station on the roof of the North Building. The weather station is a state-of-the-art, scientific-grade weather monitoring system that is built to withstand all kinds of environmental conditions. Securely installed on the school roof, it records 27 different real-time weather measurements. According to the WeatherBug Schools Program, “Its live weather data is fed into our online educational program, WeatherBug Achieve, as well as WeatherBug’s mobile and web properties and the 100+ broadcast partners across the country.”

The WeatherBug weather station includes a wind sensor and rain gauge, as well as an array that records information on temperature, relative humidity, heat index, wind chill, barometric pressure, dew point, wet bulb and more.

Blue Cluster students in Ms. Smith’s science class collected live weather data from the weather station and practiced graphing and analyzing the data they collected over time during their weather unit. The students were responsible for tracking information on rainfall, wind speeds, air pressure, humidity and dew point. According to Ms. Smith, “The WeatherBug classroom login gave us a terrific advantage now that we have our very own weather station. The WeatherBug site even provided activities for using the data that the students gathered.” She pointed out an additional advantage, “The weather station brought the experiments students did in physics and chemistry out of the abstract and made them much more real-world.”
