Gaynor to Hire Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Dear Gaynor Community,

I am excited to announce a significant step forward in achieving our long-term diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) goals as an institution.

Over the past several years, we have made great strides in incorporating a DEI lens into our curriculum and community. In the fall of 2020, we launched a DEI curriculum created by Gaynor teachers with developmentally-appropriate lessons and resources focused on identity, respect, social justice, and combating inequality. The Employee Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (EDEIC) meets every other week, and has been instrumental in helping to keep a DEI lens focused on all aspects of our community. All of our faculty and staff have participated in multiple professional development workshops focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our Parents’ Association DEI Committee has hosted creative and engaging events for parents, including lectures and social gatherings. In addition, our upcoming strategic plan is focused in large part on ensuring that diversity, equity, and inclusion becomes the thread through which we fulfill our mission.

I want to thank the parents, faculty, staff, and trustees who have supported the importance of DEI work over the past several years. Their leadership efforts have built a strong foundation for us to continue our work.

With this foundation laid, we will be hiring a full-time Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to continue to move us forward in a consistent and comprehensive way. The director will report to me and sit on the senior leadership team, serving as an important voice within the school’s decision-making structure, a key resource and advocate for the school’s community members, and the leader of Gaynor’s efforts to be a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive school community.

The director will lead the school’s diversity, equity, and inclusion work, including connecting it to Gaynor’s mission to serve our unique population of students and their families, providing strategic vision, expertise in best practices, and clear messaging with a focus on building understanding, capacity, and acceptance.

I am eager for this next stage in our efforts to become a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive school. A search firm has been selected to perform a nationwide search to find a candidate that meets our mission and DEI aspirations. I look forward to keeping you informed about our progress.
