Gaynor Community Celebrates Earth Day

Posted on Tuesday, April 18th, 2017

On Wednesday, April 18, Gaynor celebrated Earth Day with a school-wide assembly. The staircase leading down the gym was lined with posters by Middle School students that promoted environmental causes and advocacy. Dr. Gaynor welcomed students, asking if they noticed the posters on the way down to the gym and what they learned from them.

Dionne De Lancy, Gaynor’s librarian, and Andrea Hochman, the Lower School art teacher, introduced the projects created by Yellow Cluster students which tie into the greater theme of conservation and appreciation of resources. Yellow Cluster students entered original artwork and poetry into The New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s 31st Annual Water Resources Art & Poetry Contest. The 3D mixed media art created by students utilized recycled materials and reflected on lack of clean water in other countries, reminders to recycle, and filtration systems.

“Through the creation of original works of art,” said Ms. Hochman, “the students helped spread awareness about the NYC water system, and the importance of both recycling and water conservation.”

Below, check out some of the poems created by students.
