Our
reading program is individualized and adapted to the learning
style of the student. Phonetically based programs as well
as direct teaching use novels, poetry, and classical literature
form the core of our reading instruction.
An integral part of our reading program focuses on developing
comprehension skills. Our reading specialists and language
pathologists participate actively in reading and writing
instruction to facilitate students' abilities to process
and classify information and content. Instruction in visualization
techniques, sequencing of story events, making predictions,
drawing conclusions and basic cause/effect relationships
are central to our curriculum. Students are encouraged
to participate in group discussions and to formulate written
critiques of literature.
For students needing additional support, in decoding or
comprehension, remedial instruction is available with one
of our reading specialists either individually or in a
dyad.
