At the Stephen Gaynor School, we encourage our students to become involved in community service. It is important for them to learn about people in our community and how they can help make it a better place. We want our students to realize how meaningful their help is and experience the wonderful rewards of helping others.
Throughout the year, students have many opportunities to become involved. Every November, the Stephen Gaynor School collaborates with St. Gregory’s Church to collect canned food and dry goods to help area families enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. During the holiday season, we host a toy drive for the Goddard Riverside Community Center’s five day care centers. We also contribute to the global community through different service projects such as assembling first aid kits for Haiti and book collections for Project Cicero.
We also offer an afterschool community service class in which students plan and organize our school-wide service projects. Led by Community Service Coordinator and head teacher, Julia Borders, students volunteer their time to participate in each projects, educate their fellow students on their initiatives, and share their reflections with our school community.
